Christmas concerts

‘Tis the season for soul-soothing music. The Cantata Singers of Ottawa perform Saint Nicolas and a Ceremony of Carols featuring Nils Brown as Saint Nicolas, the Boys and Girls choirs of Christ Church Cathedral, and young instrumentalists drawn from across Ottawa. The concert takes place at 4 p.m. Sunday December 8 at Christ Church Cathedral, 414 Sparks St. See www.cantatasingersottawa.ca for more information
Bytown Voices Choir performs Shadows and Light, a collection of songs exploring the mysterious and angelic, at 3 p.m. on Sunday December 8 in Knox Presbyterian Church, 120 Lisgar St. Conducted by Joan Fearnley the choir will be accompanied by pianist Carla Klassen.
On Saturday, December 7, Rideau Chorale will perform Fantasia on Christmas Carols by Vaughan William. Written for baritone, chorus and orchestra, it includes traditional English folk carols. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Southminster United Church at 15 Aylmer Ave.
Stairwell Carollers perform their 47th Christmas concert. They’ve been practicing and performing at the Church of St. Columba in Manor Park for more than 20 years and their concerts have become a local tradition. The a cappella group’s concerts have become a Christmas tradition for many Manor Park families. They perform at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday December 11 at St. Columba, 24 Sandridge Rd.

Coffee in the community

The Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre (RRCRC) is holding monthly community coffee sessions on the last Friday of each month at 815 St. Laurent Blvd in the Incubator13 room (Room 124). This gathering provides an excellent opportunity for residents to connect, engage in conversations and build a stronger community over a cup of coffee.
The next RRCRC community coffee session will take place 2 to 4 p.m. Friday November 29.

Falls prevention

The Council on Aging of Ottawa is holding a morning of panel presentations and discussion of the importance of fall precention from 10 a.m. until 1 p.m. Wednesday November 20 in the cafeteria of the Rideau Hub, 815 St. Laurent Blvd. Specialists in attendance will include nutritionsists, physoptherapists and fitness experts To learn more and to register, visit the Council on Aging website.

Ottawa Art Gallery

The exhibition Stories My Father Couldn’t Tell Me: Jeff Thomas Origin continues at the Ottawa Art Gallery on at 50 Mackenzie King Bridge. until March 16. The exhibit reflects on the 40-year oeuvre of Jef Thomas, an urban Iroquois photographer and cultural theorist. A combination of photographic montages, family portraits, recontextualized archival images, and artist travelogues are used to unveil stories of resilience and survival against the odds. Ottawa Humane Society

Looking for holiday gifts? The Ottawa Humane Society (OHS) Auxiliary will be selling high quality handmade crafts at its Christmas Craft Sale. The sale takes place at “The Spot” between Bentley and Laura Secord, Carlingwood Mall 2121 Carling Ave. from 10 a.m. to 5 p.m. Thursday, Friday and Saturday November 21, 22 and 23, 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Sunday November 24. Proceeds go to support the animals at the Ottawa Humane Society. Cash, credit or debit are accepted. Sorry, no table rentals. Free parking. Power moms

Both born in affluent society in the same year, 1854, Sara Delano would become the mother of U.S. President Franklin Delano Roosevelt while Jennie Jerome would become the mother of British Prime Minister Winston Churchill. Local author Charlotte Gray’s book Passionate Mothers, Powerful Sons explores how both Sara Delano and Jennie Jerome refused to settle into cloistered lives as the wives of powerful men. Instead, both women focused their energy on supporting their sons to reach the epicenter of political power on two continents. Both leaders would shape world history through their involvement in the Second World War. Charlotte presents her book at a public reading 6 to 8 p.m. Wednesday November 27 at The Bridge Public House, 1 Donald St. The reading is free to attend but an RSP is required. RRCRC holiday exchange program

The Rideau-Rockcliffe Community Resource Centre’s annual Holiday Exchange Program is open for registration This program is designed for residents of municipal Ward 13 Rideau-Rockcliffe (residence within the area codes K1K, K1M, and parts of K1G) who could use some extra support during the holiday season.
